Understanding LSI and Scaling Indices: Why Your RO Reject Water Matters
October 15, 2026IS 10500 Explained: What the Drinking Water Standard Means for Borewell Users
October 16, 2026It is a common and frustrating situation: the RO or EDI system produces excellent water at the outlet, yet samples taken at user points fail microbial or conductivity tests. The problem is rarely the treatment plant itself. More often, it lies in the storage tank and distribution piping. High-purity water is a hostile place for most contaminants, but it is also very good at picking up anything it touches. Storage and distribution must be designed to protect it.

Why Purified Water Degrades
Once water is purified, several things can undermine its quality:
- Microbial growth: bacteria colonise stagnant zones and form biofilm on surfaces
- Leaching: unsuitable materials release ions or organics into the water
- Contamination through vents: air entering storage tanks brings dust, microbes and carbon dioxide
- Dead legs: pipe sections where water does not flow become breeding grounds for bacteria
Storage Tank Design
Material and Finish
Stainless steel, typically grade 316L for critical applications, is the standard choice. Internal surfaces are polished to reduce roughness, giving bacteria fewer places to attach.
Tank Shape and Drainage
Tanks should be fully drainable, with sloped or dished bottoms and no internal crevices. Spray balls inside the tank keep internal surfaces wetted by returning loop water, reducing biofilm in the headspace.
Vent Filters
Tanks breathe as water levels change. Hydrophobic vent filters, often 0.2 micron, prevent airborne contamination. Some systems heat vent filters to prevent condensation.
Right-Sized Volume
Oversized tanks lead to long residence times. Storage should balance demand with the risk of water sitting too long.
Distribution Loop Principles
Continuous Circulation
High-purity water should keep moving. A distribution loop circulates water from the storage tank through the plant and back, so water never stands still in the main pipes. Maintaining adequate velocity discourages biofilm formation.
Avoiding Dead Legs
Branches leading to user points should be as short as possible. Industry practice often references keeping dead legs short relative to pipe diameter. Zero-dead-leg valves are used in the most critical systems.
Drainability and Slope
Piping is installed with a slight slope so the entire system can be drained. Standing water left after draining encourages growth.
Orbital Welding
In pharmaceutical and high-purity systems, stainless steel pipes are joined by orbital welding, which produces smooth, consistent internal welds without crevices. Welds are documented and inspected.
Microbial Control Methods
UV in the Loop
UV units installed in the return or supply line reduce microbial counts in circulating water.
Ozone
Ozone maintained in the storage tank is a powerful microbial control tool. It must be destroyed, usually with UV, before water reaches user points where ozone is not wanted.
Hot Water Sanitisation
Periodically heating the loop to high temperature kills bacteria and controls biofilm. Some systems run continuously hot.
Chemical Sanitisation
Approved sanitising chemicals can be circulated, followed by thorough rinsing and testing.
Monitoring the Loop
- Online conductivity and TOC analysers where required
- Temperature and flow monitoring to confirm circulation
- Regular microbial sampling at user points and the loop return
- Trending results to catch gradual deterioration
Common Design Mistakes
- Using plastic or galvanised fittings in high-purity lines
- Long branch lines to rarely used points
- Tanks without spray balls or proper vent filters
- No provision for sanitisation
- Pumps that stop at night, letting water stagnate
Conclusion
A purified water system is only as good as its weakest link, and that is often the distribution loop. Careful attention to materials, circulation, drainability and sanitisation ensures that the quality produced by the treatment plant actually reaches the point of use.
