Troubleshooting Low Permeate Flow in RO Systems: A Systematic Approach
October 15, 2026Purified Water Storage and Distribution Loops: Keeping Water Pure After Treatment
October 16, 2026Scale is one of the most expensive problems in water treatment, and one of the most predictable. Long before a crusty white layer appears on a membrane or a heat exchanger, the water chemistry has already announced its intentions. Scaling indices are simply ways of reading that announcement.

What Is the Langelier Saturation Index?
The Langelier Saturation Index, or LSI, estimates whether water is likely to deposit calcium carbonate or dissolve it. It compares the actual pH of the water with the pH at which it would be exactly saturated with calcium carbonate, known as pHs.
LSI is calculated as pH minus pHs.
- Positive LSI: water is oversaturated and tends to form scale
- LSI near zero: water is roughly balanced
- Negative LSI: water is undersaturated and tends to dissolve calcium carbonate, which can make it corrosive to some materials
What Goes into pHs?
The saturation pH depends on four main inputs: calcium hardness, alkalinity, total dissolved solids and temperature. Higher calcium, higher alkalinity and higher temperature all push water towards scaling. This explains a common surprise: water that behaves well in a cold storage tank can deposit scale the moment it is heated in a boiler or a hot water line.
Why RO Reject Is Especially Vulnerable
An RO plant takes in feed water and concentrates the dissolved salts into the reject stream. At 75 percent recovery, salts in the reject are roughly four times more concentrated than in the feed. Calcium and bicarbonate are concentrated along with everything else, and the pH of the concentrate also tends to rise. The result is that a feed water with a comfortable LSI can produce a reject with a strongly positive LSI.
This is why designers calculate LSI for the concentrate, not just the feed. It is the tail end of the last stage that faces the highest scaling risk.
Beyond LSI: Other Indices
LSI works best for relatively low-salinity water. For more concentrated water, such as seawater RO concentrate, the Stiff and Davis Stability Index (S&DSI) is often used instead because it accounts for higher ionic strength. The Ryznar Stability Index is another variant used in cooling and distribution systems to estimate the severity of scaling or corrosion tendencies.
Calcium carbonate is only one scale. Calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, strontium sulphate, calcium fluoride and silica each have their own solubility behaviour. Design software checks these separately, and silica in particular can set a hard ceiling on recovery.
Controlling Scale in Practice
Once you know the risk, you have several tools:
Antiscalant Dosing
Antiscalants interfere with crystal formation and growth, allowing water to stay supersaturated for longer without depositing scale. They are the most common solution and are dosed in small, carefully controlled quantities. The right product and dose depend on the specific water analysis, so suppliers often run software projections before recommending one.
Acid Dosing
Lowering the feed pH converts some bicarbonate into carbon dioxide and reduces the carbonate scaling potential. This approach is less common than it once was due to chemical handling concerns, but it remains useful in specific cases.
Softening
Removing calcium and magnesium upstream with a softener eliminates hardness scaling at its source, though it adds salt consumption and regeneration effluent.
Reducing Recovery
Running at slightly lower recovery reduces concentration in the reject. It costs some water, but it can be the most reliable answer for difficult sources.
Don’t Forget Corrosion
A negative LSI is not automatically good news. RO permeate typically has a very negative LSI, which means it is aggressive towards metal pipes, concrete tanks and some fittings. Many plants adjust permeate pH or add minerals before distribution to protect downstream infrastructure.
Making It Routine
You do not need to calculate LSI by hand. Online calculators and spreadsheets handle the arithmetic. What matters is collecting accurate data: calcium, alkalinity, TDS, pH and temperature, measured regularly and recorded. With those numbers trended over time, scaling stops being a surprise and becomes a manageable, predictable part of plant operation.
