The Engineering Blueprint for Industrial Swimming Pool Filtration Systems
June 21, 2026Process Water for Distilleries and Breweries: How Water Chemistry Shapes the Final Product
September 28, 2026Ask an operator why their effluent treatment plant keeps failing its discharge tests and you will hear many explanations: bad bacteria, poor chemicals, broken blowers. Dig a little deeper and a surprising number of these problems trace back to one place at the very start of the plant: an equalisation tank that is too small, poorly mixed or missing altogether.

What an Equalisation Tank Does
Industrial effluent rarely arrives in a smooth, steady stream. A factory may discharge almost nothing overnight and then release a large batch of wash water at shift change. One process might send acidic effluent while another sends alkaline rinse water. Concentrations of organic matter, oil, colour and solids can swing widely within hours.
An equalisation tank collects this variable flow and blends it. Downstream treatment units then receive a steady flow with more consistent quality. In simple terms, it absorbs the shocks so the rest of the plant does not have to.
Flow Equalisation
The first job is balancing flow. Treatment units such as clarifiers, biological reactors and filters are designed for specific flow rates. Feeding them sudden surges reduces their efficiency. A clarifier overloaded by a surge will carry solids over. A biological tank receiving a sudden rush will have less treatment time.
With an equalisation tank, the plant can pump effluent forward at a steady rate, regardless of how unevenly it arrives.
Load Equalisation
The second job is balancing concentration. Bacteria in biological treatment are living organisms that dislike sudden changes. A spike in organic load, toxicity or pH can upset or even kill the biomass, and recovery can take days or weeks. Blending effluent dilutes these spikes, protecting the biological process.
pH Neutralisation Opportunities
When acidic and alkaline streams mix in an equalisation tank, they partly neutralise each other naturally. This reduces chemical consumption for pH correction downstream. Many plants dose acid or alkali in or after the equalisation tank to fine-tune pH before biological treatment.
Mixing Is Essential
An equalisation tank without proper mixing is just a storage tank where solids settle and septic conditions develop. Mixing can be provided by:
- Coarse bubble aeration: mixes and also keeps the effluent fresh by supplying some oxygen
- Submersible mixers: efficient mixing without aeration
- Jet mixing systems: using pump recirculation
Aerated mixing is popular because it prevents odour and the formation of hydrogen sulphide.
How Big Should It Be?
Sizing depends on the discharge pattern. A plant with highly variable flow may need equalisation capacity equal to many hours of average flow, while a steady continuous process may need much less. The best approach is to study the actual hourly discharge pattern over several days. Designers then calculate the volume needed to keep forward flow constant. When data is uncertain, a generous equalisation tank is a sound investment, because enlarging it later is difficult and expensive.
Signs Your Equalisation Is Inadequate
- Treated water quality swings widely through the day
- Biological tanks show frequent foaming or poor settling
- Clarifiers carry over solids during peak hours
- Chemical consumption is erratic
- Odour problems near the inlet
Complementary Measures
Equalisation works best alongside upstream good practices: screening to remove coarse solids, oil and grease traps for food industries, and segregation of highly toxic or concentrated streams that should be treated separately. Never rely on equalisation alone to handle a stream that should not be mixed with the main effluent at all.
The Bottom Line
The equalisation tank does not treat effluent by itself, yet it determines how well everything after it can perform. When designing a new ETP or troubleshooting an existing one, start at the inlet. A stable feed is the foundation of a stable plant.
