RO Membrane Fouling: How to Tell Scaling, Biofouling and Colloidal Fouling Apart
October 3, 2026SBR vs MBBR: Choosing the Right Biological Process for Your STP or ETP
October 4, 2026In hospitality, water is part of the guest experience. Guests notice hard water that leaves spots on glasses, showers that lose pressure, laundry that feels stiff and swimming pools that look cloudy. Behind the scenes, water also drives major operating costs: purchase from tankers or municipal supply, energy for heating, chemicals and wastewater treatment. A well-planned water system improves comfort and controls cost at the same time.

Understanding a Hotel’s Water Uses
A typical hotel or resort uses water for:
- Guest rooms: showers, basins, toilets
- Kitchens and restaurants
- Laundry
- Swimming pools and spas
- HVAC cooling towers
- Landscaping and gardens
- Boilers or heat pumps for hot water
Each use has different quality needs. Treating all water to the same high standard wastes money, while under-treating causes complaints and equipment damage.
Raw Water Treatment
Many hotels rely on borewells or tanker supply, both of which can vary in quality. A typical treatment train includes:
- Pressure sand filtration to remove turbidity and suspended solids
- Iron removal filters where groundwater carries iron, which stains linen and fixtures
- Activated carbon filtration to remove chlorine, odour and some organics
- Softening to remove hardness that damages heaters and leaves scale
Hot Water and Hardness
Hot water systems are where hard water does the most damage. Scale builds up on heating elements and in pipes, lowering efficiency and increasing energy bills. Softened water protects heaters, extends the life of laundry equipment and improves the feel of showers and linen. Laundry chemicals also work more efficiently in soft water.
Drinking Water for Guests
Many hotels operate an RO plant, with UV disinfection, for kitchen use and drinking water dispensers, sometimes bottling water in reusable glass bottles for rooms. This reduces dependence on single-use plastic bottles and can become part of the property’s sustainability story.
Swimming Pools and Spas
Pools require continuous filtration, disinfection and chemistry control. Sand filters or multi-media filters, combined with careful dosing and regular testing, keep the water clear and safe. Spas and hot tubs, with their higher temperatures, need particularly vigilant maintenance.
Sewage Treatment and Reuse
Hotels generate significant wastewater, and many are required to operate an STP. Compact technologies such as MBBR, SBR or MBR suit hotel sites, where space and odour control matter. The treated water can be reused for:
- Landscaping and garden irrigation
- Toilet flushing through dual plumbing
- Cooling tower make-up after further treatment
Reuse can significantly reduce fresh water purchases, which is especially valuable for resorts in water-scarce regions.
Odour and Noise
Guests should never smell or hear the STP. Covered tanks, odour control systems, acoustic enclosures for blowers and thoughtful placement are essential.
Kitchen Effluent
Kitchen wastewater carries fats and grease that can clog drains and upset the STP. Properly sized and regularly cleaned grease traps are essential. Some large kitchens use more advanced grease separation units.
Measuring and Managing
What gets measured gets managed. Installing water meters on major uses, such as laundry, kitchens, pools and cooling towers, helps identify wastage. Simple monitoring often uncovers leaks, overflowing tanks and inefficient processes.
Maintenance Matters
Hotels run around the clock, so water systems must be reliable. An annual maintenance contract with a qualified provider ensures filters are backwashed, media replaced, membranes cleaned and STPs kept in compliance. Standby pumps and redundancy for critical systems protect guest comfort.
Conclusion
For hotels and resorts, good water management is both a comfort factor and a cost lever. Treating each water use appropriately, recycling wastewater and maintaining equipment well creates a property that guests enjoy and owners can operate profitably.
