What a Good Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) for Water Treatment Plants Should Include
September 29, 2026Dairy Effluent Treatment: Managing Fats, Whey and High BOD Loads
September 30, 2026Treating wastewater does not make pollutants disappear. Much of what is removed ends up as sludge, and handling that sludge is one of the most underestimated costs of running an effluent or sewage treatment plant. Liquid sludge is mostly water, often more than 95 percent, so moving it around is expensive. Dewatering reduces its volume, making storage, transport and disposal far easier.

Why Dewatering Matters
Imagine a plant producing 10 cubic metres of thin sludge per day. Dewatered to a cake with 20 to 25 percent solids, that volume drops to a fraction of the original. Fewer tanker trips, smaller storage areas and lower disposal fees follow. For hazardous sludge from industrial ETPs, which must go to authorised disposal facilities, the savings are even more significant.
Conditioning Comes First
Most mechanical dewatering equipment needs sludge to be conditioned first. Polyelectrolyte, or polymer, is dosed to bind fine particles into larger flocs that release water more easily. Getting polymer type and dose right through simple jar testing often makes a bigger difference than the choice of machine.
Sludge Drying Beds
Drying beds are the simplest method. Sludge is spread over a bed of sand and gravel with underdrains. Water drains through the bed and evaporates from the surface.
Advantages
- Very low capital and operating cost
- No power or chemicals required
- Easy to understand and operate
Limitations
- Needs a large area
- Slow, often taking days to weeks
- Performance drops sharply during monsoon
- Odour and fly nuisance if poorly managed
- Manual cake removal
Drying beds still make sense for small plants with available land and dry climates, but they are increasingly impractical in dense urban sites.
Filter Press
A filter press consists of a series of plates covered with filter cloths. Conditioned sludge is pumped in under pressure, the liquid passes through the cloth and the solids form a cake between the plates. When the chambers are full, the press is opened and the cakes are discharged.
Advantages
- Produces a dry cake, often among the driest of the common options
- Reliable and well understood
- Suitable for both organic and inorganic industrial sludge
Limitations
- Batch operation requiring operator attention
- Cloth washing and replacement needed
- Manual or semi-automatic cake discharge
Filter presses are a workhorse for industrial ETPs, especially where sludge contains metal hydroxides or chemical precipitates.
Screw Press
A screw press feeds conditioned sludge into a slowly rotating screw inside a cylindrical screen. As the sludge moves forward, the space narrows and water is squeezed out through the screen.
Advantages
- Continuous, largely automatic operation
- Low speed means low power, noise and wear
- Compact footprint
- Enclosed design helps control odour
Limitations
- Cake may be somewhat wetter than a filter press for certain sludges
- Performance depends heavily on good flocculation
Screw presses have become popular for STPs in residential and commercial buildings, where unattended operation and cleanliness matter.
Other Options
Belt filter presses and decanter centrifuges are also widely used, particularly at larger municipal and industrial plants. Centrifuges handle large volumes in a small footprint but consume more power and require skilled maintenance.
How to Choose
- Small plant, ample land, dry climate: drying beds
- Industrial chemical sludge needing dry cake: filter press
- Building STPs needing clean, automatic operation: screw press
- Large volumes and limited space: centrifuge or belt press
Final Advice
Before selecting equipment, characterise your sludge: its volume, solids content and nature. Run polymer trials. Then match the technology to your site, staff and disposal route. Sludge handling deserves the same attention as the main treatment process, because an ETP that cannot get rid of its sludge will soon stop working well.
