How the Monsoon Affects Raw Water Quality and How Treatment Plants Should Respond

October 7, 2026Nitrate is one of the most widespread groundwater contaminants in the world, and parts of India are no exception. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless, so the only way to know whether your borewell water contains too much is to test it. Once detected, nitrate can be removed effectively, but choosing the right method requires understanding its source and the overall water chemistry.

Where Does Nitrate Come From?
Nitrate enters groundwater mainly from human activity:
- Fertilisers: excess nitrogen fertiliser applied to farmland leaches into aquifers
- Sewage and septic tanks: leaking sewers and poorly built soak pits release nitrogen compounds
- Animal waste: dairy farms, poultry units and cattle sheds contribute nitrogen
- Industrial discharges: certain industries release nitrogen-rich effluent
Shallow aquifers in intensively farmed or densely populated areas are most at risk. Nitrate levels can also vary seasonally, rising after fertiliser application or heavy rainfall that flushes nitrogen downward.
Why Nitrate Is a Concern
India’s drinking water standard, IS 10500, sets a limit of 45 mg/l for nitrate. High nitrate levels are particularly dangerous for infants, as they can interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, a condition known as methaemoglobinaemia or “blue baby syndrome.” Long-term exposure in adults is also a subject of health concern. For these reasons, water supplied to homes, schools, hospitals and food industries must stay within limits.
Testing for Nitrate
Accurate testing should be done by an accredited laboratory. When nitrate is found, it is wise to test for related parameters such as ammonia, nitrite, bacteria and TDS, because nitrate often signals contamination from sewage or agriculture that may bring other problems.
Nitrate Removal Technologies
Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is one of the most effective methods. Water passes through a resin that swaps nitrate for chloride. Standard anion resins remove nitrate, but they also prefer sulphate, which can reduce capacity. Nitrate-selective resins are designed to target nitrate specifically, improving performance where sulphate is high. The resin is regenerated with salt, so brine disposal must be planned.
Reverse Osmosis
RO removes nitrate along with other dissolved solids. It is a good choice when TDS, hardness or other contaminants are also high. Nitrate rejection by RO is generally somewhat lower than for many other ions, so the system must be designed with the specific nitrate level in mind.
Electrodialysis Reversal
EDR uses electrical current and ion-selective membranes to remove dissolved ions, including nitrate. It suits some larger community applications.
Biological Denitrification
Bacteria convert nitrate into harmless nitrogen gas under anoxic conditions. This is common in wastewater treatment, and in some cases it is applied to drinking water at large scale, though it requires careful control and post-treatment.
Choosing the Right Method
- Moderate nitrate, low TDS: ion exchange with nitrate-selective resin
- High nitrate with high TDS or hardness: RO
- Large municipal scale: ion exchange, EDR or biological processes depending on site conditions
Protecting the Source
Treatment addresses the symptom. Long-term protection involves good practices around the borewell: keeping septic tanks and soak pits at a safe distance, sealing the borewell head, avoiding fertiliser over-application near wells and managing animal waste properly.
Ongoing Monitoring
Because nitrate levels fluctuate, periodic testing after treatment confirms the system is performing. For ion exchange systems, test results also help schedule regeneration correctly.
Conclusion
Nitrate contamination is a growing concern, but it is manageable. Accurate testing, a suitable treatment technology and sensible protection of the water source together ensure safe, reliable water for homes, institutions and businesses.
