Starting a Packaged Drinking Water Business in India: From Idea to First Bottle
October 7, 2026Operator Log Sheets: The Simple Habit That Keeps Water Plants Healthy
October 8, 2026Electroplating and metal finishing units are often small businesses, but their effluent can be among the most hazardous in industry. Rinse waters and spent baths contain heavy metals such as chromium, nickel, zinc, copper and cadmium, and some processes use cyanide. These substances are toxic even at low concentrations. Effective treatment relies less on large machinery and more on correct segregation and well-controlled chemistry.

The Golden Rule: Segregate Streams
Plating effluent must never be treated as one mixed stream. Typical segregation includes:
- Chromium-bearing stream: from chrome plating and passivation
- Cyanide-bearing stream: from cyanide-based copper, zinc, silver or cadmium baths
- Acid and alkali stream: from pickling, cleaning and other general rinses
Segregation is essential for treatment efficiency and for safety. Cyanide streams must be kept away from acidic streams at all times, because acidifying cyanide can release highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas.
Treating Hexavalent Chromium
Hexavalent chromium is highly toxic and soluble. It cannot be precipitated directly as a hydroxide. The treatment is a two-step process:
Reduction
The chromium stream is acidified to a low pH, typically around 2 to 3, and a reducing agent such as sodium metabisulphite or ferrous sulphate is added. This converts hexavalent chromium into the far less toxic trivalent form. An ORP sensor is commonly used to confirm the reaction is complete.
Precipitation
The reduced stream is then combined with other metal-bearing effluent for pH adjustment and precipitation as chromium hydroxide.
Treating Cyanide
Cyanide is usually destroyed by alkaline chlorination in two stages:
- First stage: at high pH, typically above 10, hypochlorite oxidises cyanide to cyanate
- Second stage: at a moderately alkaline pH, further oxidation converts cyanate into carbon dioxide and nitrogen
Maintaining high pH in the first stage is critical for safety. ORP and pH control ensure each reaction is complete before the effluent moves forward.
Metal Precipitation
After chromium reduction and cyanide destruction, the streams are combined and the pH is raised, usually with lime or caustic soda, to precipitate dissolved metals as hydroxides. Each metal has an optimum pH for minimum solubility, and with several metals present, operators choose a compromise pH based on jar testing. Coagulants and polymers help form larger flocs that settle well in a clarifier or tube settler.
Complexed Metals
Some plating chemistries include complexing agents that keep metals in solution even at high pH. These may need special treatment chemicals or alternative processes, which is why understanding the plating chemistry is so important.
Polishing and Final Steps
- Sand filtration to remove fine hydroxide particles
- Selective ion exchange resins to capture residual metals where tight limits apply
- Final pH correction before discharge
Sludge Is Hazardous Waste
Metal hydroxide sludge is classified as hazardous waste. It should be dewatered, usually in a filter press, stored securely and sent to an authorised treatment, storage and disposal facility, with proper records.
Reducing Effluent at Source
- Drag-out tanks recover bath chemicals from parts before rinsing
- Counter-current rinsing reduces water use dramatically
- Spray rinses and good drainage time reduce drag-out
- Recovery technologies can return metals or chemicals to the process
Safety and Training
Operators must understand the hazards, wear protective equipment and follow procedures carefully. Clear labelling of tanks and pipes, ventilation and emergency response plans are essential.
Conclusion
Electroplating effluent treatment succeeds when it is disciplined: segregate streams, control pH and ORP precisely, handle sludge responsibly and reduce waste at source. For small units, a compact batch treatment system with proper instrumentation is often the most practical and reliable solution.
