Fine Bubble Diffusers vs Surface Aerators: Cutting Aeration Energy in Your STP
October 12, 2026Common PET Bottle Defects in Blow Moulding and How to Fix Them
October 13, 2026After months of planning, fabrication and installation, the day arrives when the new water treatment plant is ready to start. Commissioning is the stage where equipment is tested, the process is stabilised and performance is proven. It is also the owner’s best opportunity to make sure everything promised is actually delivered. A rushed commissioning often leaves hidden problems that surface months later. A thorough one sets the plant up for years of reliable service.

Before Start-Up: Pre-Commissioning Checks
Mechanical Completion
- All equipment installed as per approved drawings
- Piping supported, pressure tested and free of leaks
- Valves accessible and correctly labelled
- Tanks cleaned and free of construction debris
Electrical and Controls
- Panels wired and tested, earthing verified
- Motor rotation direction checked
- Interlocks and safety trips tested
- Instruments installed and calibrated
Utilities and Consumables
- Stable power supply with appropriate protection
- Raw water available in required quantity
- Chemicals, media and consumables on site
- Safety equipment such as eyewash stations available
Filter Media Loading and Conditioning
Filter media should be loaded in the correct layers and quantities. After loading, filters are backwashed thoroughly to remove fines. Activated carbon media typically needs extended rinsing until the water runs clear.
Flushing the System
Before any membrane or resin sees water, the pipework should be flushed to remove dust, oil and debris from fabrication. Pre-treatment output should be checked for turbidity, SDI and chlorine removal before feeding the RO system.
Membrane Installation and Start-Up
RO membranes are usually installed after pre-treatment is proven. The first start-up should be gradual, with low pressure initially and controlled flushing of preservative solution. Permeate is sent to drain until quality stabilises.
Performance Testing
Once stable, the plant should be run under design conditions and performance measured. Key checks include:
- Flow rates at each stage compared with design
- Pressure readings across filters and membranes
- Recovery and salt rejection for RO
- Treated water quality against agreed specifications
- Chemical consumption against estimates
- Energy consumption where specified
For ETPs and STPs, commissioning includes biological seeding and stabilisation, which can take several weeks before the plant consistently meets discharge norms.
Independent Testing
Where quality is critical, samples should be tested by an independent accredited laboratory, not only by the supplier’s field kits.
Documentation to Receive at Handover
- As-built drawings and process flow diagrams
- Equipment manuals and data sheets
- Control logic description and PLC backup
- Instrument calibration certificates
- Performance test results
- Recommended spare parts list
- Operation and maintenance manual
- Warranty documents
Operator Training
Training should be practical and hands-on. Operators should be able to start and stop the plant, perform backwash and cleaning, calibrate dosing pumps, read instruments, record log sheets and respond to common alarms. Ask the supplier to provide written standard operating procedures.
Punch List and Sign-Off
Inevitably, a few minor issues will remain at the end of commissioning. Record them in a punch list with agreed completion dates. Final acceptance should depend on resolving critical items.
Establish Baseline Data
The readings recorded during commissioning become the baseline for future troubleshooting. Normalised RO flow, pressure drop, rejection and treated water quality at start-up allow operators to judge how much performance has changed over time.
Conclusion
Commissioning is not a formality. It is the point where the owner confirms the plant works as promised and gains the knowledge to keep it working. Taking the time to verify performance, collect documentation and train operators thoroughly will pay dividends throughout the life of the plant.
