Remineralisation After RO: Why Pure Water Sometimes Needs Minerals Back
October 5, 2026Choosing a Water Treatment Partner: 12 Questions to Ask Before You Place an Order
October 6, 2026Groundwater is the backbone of drinking water supply across much of India, and in many regions it carries naturally occurring contaminants that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Fluoride and arsenic are two of the most serious. Both occur naturally in certain rock formations, and long-term exposure above safe limits can cause significant health problems. The good news is that both can be removed reliably with the right technology.

Understanding the Limits
India’s drinking water standard, IS 10500, sets limits for both contaminants:
- Fluoride: acceptable limit of 1.0 mg/l, with a permissible limit of 1.5 mg/l in the absence of an alternate source
- Arsenic: limit of 0.01 mg/l
These are low concentrations, which means accurate laboratory testing is essential. Field kits are useful for screening, but treatment design should rely on accredited lab results.
Why Fluoride Matters
Small amounts of fluoride help protect teeth, but excess intake over years can cause dental fluorosis, which stains and weakens teeth, and skeletal fluorosis, which affects bones and joints. Several states have districts with naturally high fluoride in groundwater.
Fluoride Removal Methods
Activated Alumina Adsorption
Water passes through a bed of activated alumina, which adsorbs fluoride. It is effective and widely used in community and small plants. The media needs periodic regeneration with chemicals or replacement, and performance depends on pH, so careful operation is required.
Reverse Osmosis
RO removes fluoride along with other dissolved salts. It is a strong choice where TDS is also high. The reject stream must be managed responsibly because it contains concentrated fluoride.
Nalgonda Technique
Developed in India, this method uses alum and lime to precipitate and remove fluoride. It has been used at household and community scale, though it requires careful dosing and produces sludge.
Bone Char and Other Media
Some specialised adsorbents are available for specific applications, each with its own cost and regeneration requirements.
Why Arsenic Matters
Chronic arsenic exposure is linked to skin lesions, various cancers and other serious health effects. Arsenic contamination affects groundwater in parts of the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins and in some other regions.
Arsenic Removal Methods
Oxidation First
Arsenic exists mainly in two forms, As(III) and As(V). As(V) is much easier to remove. Most treatment systems begin by oxidising As(III) to As(V) using chlorine, potassium permanganate or another oxidant.
Adsorptive Media
Iron-based adsorbents such as granular ferric hydroxide are highly effective for arsenic. Water passes through a pressure vessel filled with media, which captures arsenic until the media is exhausted and replaced.
Coagulation and Filtration
Iron-based coagulants combined with filtration can remove arsenic effectively, particularly where iron is already present in the water. Many iron removal plants also reduce arsenic.
Reverse Osmosis
RO removes arsenic effectively, especially As(V), and is suitable for point-of-use and smaller community systems.
Choosing the Right Approach
- High fluoride with high TDS: RO is often the most practical route
- High fluoride with acceptable TDS: activated alumina is efficient
- Arsenic with iron in water: oxidation, coagulation and filtration or iron-based media
- Arsenic with low TDS: adsorptive media systems
Managing Waste Responsibly
Spent media and treatment sludge contain concentrated contaminants. They must be handled and disposed of responsibly, not dumped where they can leach back into the ground.
Testing Is Ongoing
Groundwater quality can change over time and with seasons. Treated water should be tested regularly to confirm the system is working, and media replacement should be based on actual test results.
Conclusion
Fluoride and arsenic are serious, but they are solvable problems. With accurate testing, the right treatment choice and consistent monitoring, communities, institutions and industries can provide water that is safe for long-term consumption.
