TDS, Conductivity and Hardness: Making Sense of Your Water Test Report
October 12, 2026Commissioning a New Water Treatment Plant: A Practical Checklist for Owners
October 13, 2026Walk around almost any biological sewage or effluent treatment plant and you will hear the steady hum of blowers or the churning of surface aerators. Aeration supplies the oxygen bacteria need to break down organic pollution, and it is typically the single largest energy consumer in the plant, often accounting for half or more of total power use. Small improvements here translate directly into lower electricity bills.

Why Oxygen Transfer Efficiency Matters
The goal of aeration is not to move air but to dissolve oxygen into water. Oxygen transfer efficiency describes how much of the supplied oxygen actually dissolves. A system with poor efficiency must move far more air, consuming more power, to achieve the same dissolved oxygen level.
Surface Aerators
Surface aerators are mechanical devices mounted at the water surface. They agitate and splash water into the air, increasing contact area and drawing oxygen in.
Strengths
- Simple, robust and easy to understand
- No submerged parts to clog
- Suitable for large lagoons and oxidation ditches
Weaknesses
- Generally lower oxygen transfer efficiency per unit of power than fine bubble systems
- Splashing creates aerosols, noise and odour
- Heat loss in cold climates
- Limited in deep tanks
Coarse Bubble Diffusers
Coarse bubble diffusers release larger bubbles from the tank floor. They provide strong mixing and resist clogging, but larger bubbles rise quickly and offer less surface area, so oxygen transfer is relatively modest. They are often used in equalisation tanks, aerobic digesters and channels where mixing matters more than efficiency.
Fine Bubble Diffusers
Fine bubble diffusers, usually disc or tube type with perforated EPDM or similar membranes, release very small bubbles across the tank floor. Small bubbles have a large surface area relative to volume and rise slowly, giving oxygen more time to dissolve.
Strengths
- High oxygen transfer efficiency, especially in deeper tanks
- Lower energy per kilogram of oxygen transferred
- Quiet operation with minimal aerosols
Weaknesses
- Membranes can foul or harden over time
- Require periodic inspection and eventual membrane replacement
- Need clean, dry air from properly maintained blowers
Tank Depth Makes a Difference
Fine bubble systems perform better in deeper tanks because bubbles spend more time rising through the water. However, deeper tanks need blowers capable of higher discharge pressure. Designers balance depth, blower selection and efficiency to minimise total energy.
Controlling Dissolved Oxygen
Even the best diffusers waste energy if blowers run at full speed regardless of demand. Most plants need only around 2 mg/l of dissolved oxygen in the aeration tank for good treatment. Running much higher wastes power without improving results.
Practical Improvements
- Install a DO sensor in the aeration tank
- Fit a variable frequency drive on the blower
- Control blower speed automatically to maintain the target DO
- Reduce airflow during low-load night hours
Plants that adopt DO-based control often see meaningful reductions in aeration power.
Maintenance for Sustained Efficiency
- Check for uneven bubbling patterns, which indicate fouled or damaged diffusers
- Clean blower inlet filters regularly
- Monitor blower discharge pressure; a steady rise suggests diffuser fouling
- Replace diffuser membranes on a planned schedule
- Inspect pipework for leaks, especially at joints
Upgrading an Existing Plant
Many older STPs still run surface aerators or coarse diffusers in tanks that could benefit from fine bubble systems. Retrofitting diffusers, upgrading blowers and adding DO control can improve both treatment quality and energy use. A short energy audit typically reveals where the savings lie.
Conclusion
Aeration is where a plant’s energy bill is decided. Choosing efficient diffusers, sizing blowers sensibly and controlling dissolved oxygen intelligently turns aeration from a fixed overhead into a managed, optimised cost.
